The Haudenosaunee Development Institute (HDI) is a governance and regulatory body originally established in 2007 by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council (HCCC). Headquartered in Six Nations of the Grand River, HDI oversees land use and development across all Haudenosaunee territories. The Institute’s primary mission is to protect the
Haudenosaunee Nation’s cultural heritage, treaty rights, and sacred sites while guaranteeing that all land development undertaken is ecologically sound and meets the nation’s spiritual, environmental, and cultural values. Since its creation, HDI has developed a series of comprehensive policies to regulate Haudenosaunee land use. These are perhaps best embodied by the Haudenosaunee Green Plan and the Haudenosaunee Development Protocol. Among other provisions, these initiatives prioritize environmental preservation designed to safeguard wetlands, watersheds, and endangered species, and require that all developers submit detailed building plans to minimize any negative ecological impact. HDI also enforces ethical practices in archaeological excavations within Haudenosaunee territory, ensuring the proper handling and protection of all artifacts and ruins is observed throughout all stages of development. By administering its regulatory framework, the Haudenosaunee Development Institute acts as a guardian, verifying and assuring that all land development projects respect Haudenosaunee laws and traditions. HDI reinforces the sovereignty of the Haudenosaunee nation and enforces the protection of its ancestral lands and cultural history for future generations.
